November 8/12 19:15 pm - Bikes for Tykes North Vancouver

James Wilson, owner of the North Vancouver bike shop Obsession: Bikes, believes every kid should have the experience of owning a bicycle, and many less fortunate children never get to experience this joy. To move towards this goal his store has initiated a Bikes for Tykes program in North Vancouver. Each year they partner with Social Service agencies to help place previously loved kids bikes with under-privileged kids. The store has placed over 100 bikes a year since 2005.

He has initiated a call to the bike industry for bike and bicycle parts.

The donor bicycles come from the community but, since there is no revenue derived from this, the parts become a huge expense and a tremendous amount of labour is required ($$). He is asking members of the bike business to help.

The program requires: kids size tires, tubes, brake pads, cables, V-brake noodles, grips, 6 and 7 speed shifters and saddles to make these old bikes new again.

Wilson says that the program is not at risk - "I just think we could do a better job helping kids discover a love for bikes".
