Team Granfondo Axel Merckx & Team Wedgewood are joining forces to announce an around the clock training session and Silent Auction to raise money for their team members who are participating in the BC Cancer Foundations Ride To Conquer Cancer 2011. The event will take place at the new Fitness FX Studio in Vancouver between Noon on Saturday, March 5th and Noon on Sunday, March 6th.

Olympian and ten-time Tour de France rider Axel Merckx, along with friends and teammates from both teams will all spin away the 24-hour period in a relay format that will include sprint competitions, in a festival-like atmosphere for all the family.

"This is a great opportunity for me to again show my support for a cause that I have always been very involved with, especially in British Columbia," said Axel. "Cancer touches all our lives, whether we like it or not, and I will continue to do what I can to help the BC Cancer Foundation discover a World Free From Cancer."

Headlining the Silent Auction will be copy number 511 of 525 of the Eddy Merckx Limited Edition Art Book. No longer available, this treasured piece contains memories of the Cannibal's career and is truly a collector's piece. Other cycling memorabilia and cycling equipment, including a bike courtesy of the Vancouver Bike Gallery will be on display for bidding.

Donations will be collected at the event and bids on the Silent Auction items will close at noon on Sunday, March 6th, and you will have to be present in person to bid. Coffee and refreshments, including Belgium Waffles, will be available courtesy of Vancouver's Pâtisserie Lebeau.

Co-organizer Philip Meyer of the Wedgewood Cycling Team thinks that a 24 Hour Spin is the ideal fundraising vehicle for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, "This is a great way for both our team riders to fundraise and prepare for this epic ride," said Meyer. "Many people from the Vancouver area will also be travelling to Penticton this summer to ride in the inaugural Granfondo Axel Merckx with Axel and his Father, so we hope they will stop by and support this very important cause."
