Earlier this month, Trek retailers across the United States hosted the sixth annual Trek Women Breast Cancer Awareness Ride, raising over $250,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The 2011 donation is a record for the event’s history and nearly doubles the 2010 amount. Over 5,500 individuals participated in the ride hosted by 98 Trek retailers across the country to raise funds and awareness. Since its inception in 2006, the Trek Women Breast Cancer Awareness Ride has raised nearly $600,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

"Breast cancer is a disease that affects 1 in 8 women in the US in their lifetime," said Trek Women Brand Manager Leslie Prevish. "To partner with our network of retail partners to help create something that might help protect more women, is something really special to us. We’re excited that more people than ever came out to support this important cause."

Top fundraising Trek Retailers included Syracuse Bicycle, who hosted 427 participants and raised more than $15,000. Photos from these BCAR events and others are posted in the Trek Women Breast Cancer Awareness Ride Photo Gallery at www.facebook.com/trekwomen. As part of the event, Trek Women hosted a national sweepstakes, with the grand prize winner receiving a Trek Travel trip, and runner up nabbing a Lexa Trek’s newest Women’s Specific Design road bike.

The mission of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, while increasing public awareness about good breast health. This year’s fundraising was bolstered by a generous donation of $3000 from event sponsor Rayovac.

The 2011 Breast Cancer Awareness Ride is sponsored by Trek Women, Bontrager, Rayovac, JBL, Sherpani, Trek Travel, and Trek Retailers. The 2012 BCAR is tentatively planned for October 6th of next year.
