Another full weekend of fat-tire fun is assured for this year's North Shore Credit Union Test of Metal weekend on June 15th to 17th.

In addition to Saturday’s marquee event-the 17th annual North Shore Credit Union Test of Metal-there are activities organized to keep everyone entertained throughout the weekend.

“We’re planning to hold a number of event to complement the race,” said Test of Metal race director, Cliff Miller. “There will be some of the things that visitors have come to expect, plus we’ll be sure to keep some surprises too.”

The Squamish mountain biking race season begins in earnest on May 12 with The OreCrusher.

Presented by Republic Bicycles, the OreCrusher is one of the Test of Metal group of events; it is a classic cross-country lap race through some Brackendale's best single-track.

“This is a great race to start your racing season or to make your first mountain bike race,” said race organizer Armand Hurford. “It's inclusive, low-key and spectator friendly.”

The Test of Metal, which takes place on June 16, 2012, is a gruelling 67 kilometre point-to-point mountain bike race through Squamish's world-renowned trails.

The Test of Metal is the centrepiece of the Squamish Mountain Bike Festival which runs from Friday, June 15 to Sunday June 17. The weekend activities include the “Pre-Test Festival” in downtown Squamish on Friday evening and the “Rock Star Invitational Downhill” on Sunday.

“There's a whole weekend of family-oriented activities,” said Miller. “Even if you're not racing, Squamish is a great place to spend that weekend.”

The race, which regularly sells out its 800 spaces in under 30 minutes, has an impressive list of past participants including Canadian Olympians Alison Sydor, Geoff Kabush, and Seamus McGrath, World Champion Catharine Pendrell, as well as notable celebrities like Vancouver Canuck icon Trevor Linden.

The Test of Metal Inc. is a not-for-profit society run by volunteers, and any proceeds from the race are returned to the community through charitable donations. Since its inception, the Test of Metal has donated more than $145,000 to community organizations and events.
