Athletes and coaches travel to the ends of the earth to prove themselves against the best, however, more often than not, this lifestyle is less glamorous than it sounds. Travelling on planes, trains and automobiles to countries requiring special vaccinations requires significant preparation, and our panellists will share their tips for maintaining optimal health for performance, regardless of the circumstances.

Dr Bob McCormack

A prominent medical figure throughout Canada, Dr. Bob McCormack boasts an impressive resume and has contributed to many local and national sports teams. After majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, from 1973 to 1975, Dr. McCormack remained at Queen's to attend the medical school for five years.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Dr. McCormack came to Vancouver in 1981 and has been involved in the care of several sports teams and elite athletes at the varsity, national team, and professional levels. He was the Chief Medical Officer for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, BC, and is currently the Chief Medical Officer for the Canadian Olympic team.

Dr. McCormack is also involved in several prospective outcome studies and is the Director of the Simon Fraser Orthopedic Research Foundation. He was a founding member of COTS and JOINTS to facilitate multicentre Canadian trials in trauma and shoulder surgery, and is currently Head of the Division of Arthroscopy and Athletic Injuries within the Department of Orthopedics at the University of British Columbia.

The established physician has a clinical practice at the New Westminster Orthopedic and Sport Medicine Center, with his focus being on athletic injuries, musculoskeletal trauma, evaluation methodology, and knee and shoulder injuries.

Dr. McCormack is a member of the Queen's University Athletics Hall of Fame, has received the Dietrich Award for his contribution to Simon Fraser University athletics, and is an honorary lifetime member of SportMedBC.

Marc Rizzardo

Marc has been involved with elite sport in Canada for the past 20 years. Through his strong relationship with EA Sports and the NHL's Minnesota Wild, Marc has worked with some of the world's top athletes from the NBA, NHL and NFL. He has been the head coach for the Langara Men's soccer team since 1986 and won a gold medal with the BC Western Canada Games Team in 2003.

Marc has a post graduate Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy and was the Chief Therapist for Canada's Pan Am Games Medical team in 2007, the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and is heading to London this summer in the same role for the 2012 Olympic Games. He is a Clinical Instructor in the UBC School of Rehabilitation Sciences and Pysiotherapy Consultant for the Riverdance Dance Company, Canada's National Soccer and Fencing Teams.

As a member of the medical team, Marc has been to the Canada Games, World University Games, Pan American Games and the Olympic Games. He is a National Examiner for Sports Physiotherapy Canada and volunteers extensively - BC Summer Games, the Vancouver Sun Run, the 24 Hr. Relay, Vancouver Marathon and Triathlons.

Wendy Epp

Wendy Epp is a sport physiotherapist and co-owners of Form Physiotherapy in South False Creek. She is an active member of Vancouver’s sport medicine community throughout her 19-year career, including taking on managerial roles at 2010 Olympic venues.

She has enjoyed significant and ongoing National Team involvement with the Canadian Freestyle Ski Program, culminating with her attending the Salt Lake City with the team.

Wendy has a strong following in the running/triathlon communities, both as a competitor and as a therapist. As the developer of the Team BC Functional Screening Program, which has now evolved to National Team ranks, she has made a significant contribution in the areas of injury prevention and program design.

Wendy, along with business partner Nadine Plotnikoff, established Form Physiotherapy, which is located inside a large personal training studio in Vancouver. They have enjoyed shifting to a one-on-one style of practice, allowing them to focus on a problem-solving and goal-oriented approach with their clients.
