December 6/12 10:20 am - TaG Cycling - Canadian Cyclists Expand Cycling Studio
Posted by Editoress on 12/6/12
While we were in B.C. for the Cyclo-cross Nationals in mid-November, we took the time to visit members of the Canadian cycling community and industry. Among those we visited were former Olympians Lesley Tomlinson and Gina Grain who formed TaG Cycling three years ago. TaG, of course, stands for Tomlinson and Grain.
The business, at its core, consists of cycling studios in North Vancouver and Whistler (opened recently) that provide cycling-specific workout programs. Whatever you do, don't call it 'Spinning' ... Tomlinson and Grain offer ongoing programs that help riders develop their cycling fitness during sessions that mimic bike rides, using CycleOps Pro 300 machines.
Participants warmup for the start of a one hour session
A large proportion of their clientele are aspiring Grand Fondo riders, and the sessions progress through the off-season to build fitness for on-road cycling in the Spring. While clients can drop in as often or infrequently as they wish (rather than memberships, participants purchase time online through the website, and reserve space for specific sessions), for optimal development, the pair recommend two to three times a week workouts.
Lesley Tomlinson leads a mid-week evening one hour session
Every new participant receives a fitness test and bike fitting to determine their wattage. The wattage results become the baseline for their efforts during the sessions. Everyone in a session works from their own baseline so, for example, when Lesley yells '60% effort', riders know to ride to that own personal level. We also saw considerable emphasis on choosing a proper cadence and varying the type of riding simulated - into the wind, climbing, etc.

Tomlinson and Grain expanded to Whistler due to demand from Vancouver clients, and have brought other former national team riders into the fold, including Trish Sinclair and Chrissy de Vall (nee Redden) at the Whistler location. Another well-known Canadian ex-pro joining TaG is Andrew Pinfold, who runs 'Pin it with Pinner' sessions in the North Van location every week.
Cleaning up after one class and get ready for the next
Gina and Lesley have found that the client demand has spilled over into on-road outdoor sessions, and even some international cycling trips - first to France and to Spain next year.
As Gina said during our visit (see video interview below), "All of us have a doctorate, a PhD in cycling." TaG Cycling offers an opportunity for all cyclists to learn from these Doctors of Cycling.
