December 15/12 9:46 am - Canadian Cyclist Gift Guide - Day 4

Posted by Editoress on 12/15/12

For Day 4 of the Canadian Cyclist Christmas Gift Guide our suggestion is:  Go Local.  In our travels across Canada, we have found that pretty much every region has a selection of cycling artisans producing unique cycling-related items.

When we were in Vancouver in November (attending the National Cyclo-cross Championships), we came across Randi Obenauer, who designs and makes Ora Bags in her West Hastings workshop.  These leather handlbar bags are crafted from fine, top grade leather, and provide enough room for a wallet, keys and cellphone (or, as Randi says a friend pointed out - two cans of beer...).  The bag comes in black, chocolate brown, and rich brown, and is made from a sturdy new water-resistant leather.  The cost is $110.  Visit orabags.com

Another example of local Canadian content is Poka Cycle, whom we talked about in our coverage of the La Bicicletta One-of-a-Kind Show.  Suzanne Carlsen makes exquisite head badges and bike brooches, as well as a selection of bike bags.  Visit pokacycle.com .

These are just some examples of the cycling craftspeople that span our country.  Many only sell regionally, so check with your local bike shop and cycling friends for more examples.
