After qualifying first on Thursday with a world record time, Both the United States and Great Britain broke that record in their first round races en route to the gold medal final.  Canada set the third fastest time, and raced against New Zealand for the bronze medal.

The American squad led for the opening 1000 metres of the gold medal race by less than a tenth of a second, however, from that point on the British squad of Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Laura Trott took the lead to break the world record again, dropping it to 4:10.236 .  Canada won the bronze over New Zealand. "Honestly, I couldn't be more proud of our team," said Laura Trott, who won her third gold medal.  "It was four individuals riding round as one.  I've never been in a team that feels so seamless; everyone was giving absolutely 100% to get to that finish line first, and I couldn't be prouder than to be out there with them.  Our coach said to us four years ago that 4:10 would win the Olympics, and I thought 'No', because at the time we were doing 4:21 ... to knock it down 11 seconds is unbelievable."

The Women's Keirin final included six riders from six different countries.  With over a lap to go, Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands powered to the front.  Rebecca James of Great Britain made a late surge in the final half lap, but her bike throw on the line wasn't enough, and she had the settle for silver.  Anna Meares of Australia won the bronze, the sixth Olympic medal of her career.

"I knew I could go long in the Keirin, but I had to push, push as hard as I could, because I saw them coming behind me," said Ligtlee.  "I wasn't sure that I had won when I crossed the line ... it's unbelievable and it still has to sink in."
