December 24/20 10:53 am - Teigen Pascual Chosen as Best Newcomer of 2020

When there is a deserving individual, we present the Roger Sumner Award for Best Newcomer, and this year we have chosen BMXer Teigen Pascual of Squamish, BC, for the award.

The Roger Sumner Award is named after Dr Roger Sumner, who passed away in December of 2000 after being struck by a car while riding his bike. An admired coach and respected competitor, Roger participated in numerous competitions as a true ambassador to cycling. Roger was particularly involved in encouraging the development of new riders. He was a mentor for many great Canadian cyclists, including Jocelyn Lovell, Alex Stieda, Sara Neil, Ron Hayman and Brian Walton. This award is only presented if we feel that there has been a suitable break-through performance by a Canadian rider.

Teigen Pascual is in only her first year of racing as a Junior, but the 17 year old showed her promise as a U17 by finishing second at the 2019 UCI Challenge Worlds in the Girls 16 class and won the overall championship title in the 2019 USA BMX series.

This year, she won the first three UCI events she did as a Junior in February and March, just prior to the lockdown. She finished the year ranked tenth in the world rankings, despite having only three results to her name.
