Jenn Jackson (Liv Factory) became the first Canadian rider to qualify for the World Cup XCC this season, finishing 18th at Round 4 in Val di Sole, Italy, on Friday. Jackson's result will put her on the third row for the XCO on Sunday. Laura Stigger (Specialized Factory) won with a bike throw against Puck Pieterse Alpecin-Deceuninck), with world champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot (Ineos Grenadiers) third. In the men's race, World Cup leader Luca Schwarzbauer (Canyon Collective) won to extend his overall lead.
"I'm super happy to back in the Short Track [XCC] here in Val di Sole," said Jackson. "I've never actually raced [the XCC] on this track before; this is the first Short Track I've done in Europe since early last season, so I'm really glad to get back in and to have the opportunity for a good call up [for the XCO]."
"I've been working my way back up the rankings since I broke my elbow last year, so this is my first of the season. I had hoped to get more points earlier in the year so I could race the Short Track, but had a bit of a lackluster start to the season, fighting for positions further back than would give meaningful points, so things are starting to come around!"
"Eighteenth is a really good finish; I was in the mix for the last few positions for the second row [top 16], but didn't quite have the jump. I was riding in a pretty nice spot, where I wouldn't get jammed up on the climb, so I was pretty even with my position, but the group would ebb and flow around me. I was still struggling in a few places to really get the torque down on the flats and the bumpy fields, which is something I need to work on for Sunday, since there is a long transfer out to the second part of the course."
"I'm looking forward to Sunday; I feel strong on the bike and just need to smooth out some of the technical riding. It's a chunky course, so I need to make sure the bike is doing the work for me and that I can focus on putting the energy on the climbs and descending relaxed but fast. Hopefully I can finish off this block of European racing in a good place before Nationals."
