UCI & Worlds News

At the Road Worlds the UCI also holds its annual Congress, and announces the awarding of championships to various sites. We announced the Mountain Bike World Cup for 2007 yesterday (see Daily News September 19/06 12:30pm EDT - 2007 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Calendar). In other Congress news, the UCI Management Committee has awarded the following World Championships:

BMX 2009: Adelaide (Australia)

Junior 2009: Moscow (Russia)

MTB Marathon 2009: Graz (Austria)

The Management Committee also approved the introduction of three new events for the Track World Championships - Men's Omnium and Women's Team Sprint (will begin this season, 2006-2007), plus Women's Team Pursuit (starting 2007-2008). The women's events will be added to the Track World Cup also.

The Management Committee approved the replacement of Manolo Saiz (Liberty Seguros) by Roger Legeay (Credit Agricole) in the UCI ProTour Council as the team manager representative. Saiz and some of his riders have been 'tainted' by the Operacion Puerto doping scandal.

Team Discovery rider Janez Brajkovic (Slovenia) will not start the Elite Men's time trial on Thursday. Brajkovic said at a press conference in Ljubljana that he still had chest pain after finishing the Vuelta on Sunday. Brajkovic won the Espoir ITT title in 2004. He intends to ride the road race on Sunday.
