The local season came to an end on a high note with the final event of the Mike's Bike Shop Cup. This last stage of the series was the Boo-cross and was taken by Guy Pellerin. He was followed closely by André Brisson and Cameron Thorne. Before the event, kids of the riders taking place in the Cup went for two laps of the modified course and their run ups included treats and the mandatory dismount was forcing them down a slide. These little ghosts re-invented cyclo-cross!
In the general classification, Riverview's Chris Selkirk took the top spot with 805 points accumulated throughout the season in the cross country, criterium, track and finally 'Cross events. With the victory came the right to pick a charity to offer the profits made with the Mike's Bike Shop Cup, and Selkirk opted for Moncton Headstart. A donation will be made in the next few days. Charles Cormier and Don Ricker completed the podium. A great thanks to all the participants, our sponsor (Mike's Bike Shop), and our partners for this great event!
Although this completes the local season in Dieppe, the National Cycling Centre - Atlantic Canada will take place in one more event, the National Cyclo-cross Championship. Last year's silver medal winner, Garrett MacLeod will head west to Nanaimo on November 12 to aim for the top spot on the junior podium. The Centre will have big shoes to fill this Fall with the retirement of 7-time national champion, Peter Wedge.
Along with Wedge's retirement, the National Track Championships, held September 9th to 12th, were among the highlights of the 2006 season. The success of this event certainly contributed to building the good reputation of the Centre. The on-going construction of the Dieppe BMX track also kept the Centre staff busy during the past few weeks. This last project of 2006 should be ready as soon as Mother Nature decides to cooperate.
On the medal count, the Giant Elite riders also rode well collecting another 8 national championships medals.
