The young Australian phenonenom, Cadel Evans (Diamondback) has just won the Vail World Cup race. Michael Rasmussen (Trek-Volkswagen) led almost from the beginning (after an opening charge by the French Sunn-Nike riders), but Evans, whom our correspondent Hank Sydor says: „looked to be pacing himself all afternoon‰, put in a stellar last lap to take the race by 1:36. Rasmussen was actually caught by Jerome Chiotti (GT), but fought back to take the silver position. Hubert Pallhuber (Diamondback/Tissot) and Pavel Tcherkassov (Diamondback/Tissot) held on to the places that they had started the last lap with - 4th and 5th respectively. World Cup leader Miguel Martinez (Sunn-Nike) finished 6th. Another rider who conserved his energy until the last lap was Canadian Kirk Molday (Marin), who moved up from 11th to 7th, 6:38 behind the winner. Other Canadian finishers: Roland Green (Kona) in 18th, Andreas Hestler (Rocky Mountain, 28th) and Chris Sheppard (Haro, 38th). Official results and standings to follow.
