La-Z-Boys no slouches in Alberta

The Alberta road calendar kicked off this past weekend with the Velocity Stage Race, held in and around Edmonton.

The three-stage event included an 11 km Time Trial and Criterium Saturday, and a flat, windy road race Sunday. Racing was somewhat in doubt Friday evening as a spring snowstorm blew through central Alberta, but by Saturday morning there was only some lingering rain and heavy wind to contend with.

The wind continued through Sundayâ€™s Road Race, creating some tough and selective racing conditions. The Womenâ€™s race featured a strong field and close racing amongst the top competitors. First-year Espoir rider Julie Beveridge (bicisport) came out the winner on the strength of her Time Trial, but she was challenged in the Criterium and Road Race by respective stage winners Alison Testroete (Expresscopy.com) and Stephanie Roorda (Synergy).

In the Category 1/2 menâ€™s race, members of the La-Z-Boy team, made up largely of transplanted prairie boys, won all three stages, taking the top 3 spots in the Criterium and Road Race, and on General Classification. Saskatchewan native Rob Britton of the La-Z-Boy team prevailed as the overall winner.

Over 200 hundred competitors competed in this first race of the Alberta Road Cup, hosted by the Velocity Cycling Club of Edmonton.
