Bike Shop Owner Finishes Second in Provincial Election

Owen Sound-based bike shop owner Shane Jolley (Jolley's Alternative Wheels) had the strongest result of any Green Party candidate yesterday in the Ontario provincial election, when he finished second to Progressive Conservative incumbent Bill Murdoch. In the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound riding, Jolley garnered 33.1% of the vote (14,964 votes) to Murdoch's 46.7% (21,100 votes). Liberal candidate Selwyn Hicks was a distant third at 14.8% (6,694 votes).

The ruling Liberals won a second majority government, with 71 seats to the Progressive Conservative's 26 and NDP 10. Prior to the election, the Liberal party had pledged to eliminate the provincial sales tax on bicycles and bicycle helmets, and to invest in municipal cycling infastructure.
