Axel Merckx to lead BC Cancer Foundation Ride

This June, recreational cyclists of all ages will have the chance to cycle with one of the world's top cyclists and qualify to win a trip to the 2008 Tour de France as well as raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Following a morning of racing in the B.C. Provincial Road Race Championship, Belgium National Cycling Champion and Olympic Bronze medallist Axel Merckx will join and lead an exciting, new fundraising community ride.

The top fundraisers will be rewarded with some great prizes including the Grand Prize of a luxury trip for two to the 2008 Tour de France!

"I am delighted to be returning to Vancouver to help raise support for the BC Cancer Foundation" explained Axel. "It was a great experience to ride with so many champions of the cause last fall I just had to return to keep the momentum going, so I encourage everyone to sign up and participate" continued Axel.

Axel Merckx now lives in Kelowna BC with his family and has always been a tremendous supporter of the BC Cancer Foundation. Axel now operates Axel Merckx Cycling Tours www.axelmerckx.com.

Premier Gordon Campbell, who was honorary chair and also rode in last year's cycling fundraiser, will return to head the BC Cancer Foundation's new event.

The 40km community ride, on June 1, 2008 in Vancouver, will return to Point Grey Village & West 10th Avenue for the start and will continue on a scenic course through the UBC endowment lands. The ride is open to cyclists of all ages and abilities. Proceeds will go to the BC Cancer Foundation to support research at the BC Cancer Agency.

The BC Cancer Foundation's Westside Cycling Classic is an ongoing partnership with the Wedgewood Cycling Team

To register for the morning races or the afternoon community ride please visit www.cycleforcancer.com.

Established in 1935, The BC Cancer Foundation raises funds to support research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, throughout B.C.
