BC Bike Race “The Last 2 Spots” Contest Winners Announced
Press release

“The Ultimate Singletrack Experience” announced late last week the winners of its very first contest entitled “The Last 2 Spots”. Congratulations to Fernanda Mejia & Alonso Sanchez of Mexico, who captured the online competition's $20,000 grand prize.

“The Last 2 Spots” contest started in February with a general call for entries at www.bcbikerace.com. This initial phase challenged entrants to seriously reflect on their most memorable experiences on the trail with their “riding buddy.” Valid submissions required a minimum 500 word essay describing an experience and articulating why the entrant and proposed partner should win the coveted “Last 2 Spots”. Prospective contestants had until mid-May to submit an essay along with a requisite photo of the proposed duo.

Phase two saw a panel of judges review the broad array of entries and choose 3 finalists whose stories and photos were posted on the BC Bike Race website for public voting. Over the 3-week voting period more than 2700 unique visitors read the stories online and voted for their favorite.

On June 12, the Mexican pair emerged the grand prize winners, by almost 200 votes.

As inaugural winners of the BC Bike Race “The Last 2 Spots” contest, Mejia and Sanchez will receive the last 2 two coveted entries to the BC Bike Race, 2 Trek Fuel EX bikes, 2 international flights provided by Flight Center, 2 Harbour Air tickets, 3 BC Ferries crossings, 2 Dakine bike bags and a ton more swag.

Friends and riding partners for years, Mejia and Sanchez had determined BC Bike Race to be their event of choice for 2008. Below is an excerpt from Mejia's moving entry; you can read the complete story at www.bcbikerace.com
"I've been thinking of some fancy essay to write and try to convince you that we deserve to win this contest. Instead, just tell you who we are.
My name is Fernanda, I'm 25 and I got out of college last year. I did a B.S. in International Business. Alonso is this amazing 19-year-old guy (I can't call him a kid anymore). He is a little mature man who's probably going to study physics at the University of Texas at Dallas next year; but for now he is just training for this race.
I'm sure you are wondering, how come a 25 year old woman and a 19 year old became so profoundly bounded that decided to race together for seven days? Well, this is one of many things the bicycle has brought into my life, and something I'll try to show with this essay - biking has not only given me great and unforgettable moments; it has also given me a little brother, and to both of us a physical and spiritual integrity (which we never thought we'd achieve).”
