Defending Champion Linda Jackson Battles Back From Crash To Win 8th Stage Of HP LaserJet Women's Challenge

Pomerelle, ID, June 15 - Canadian Olympian Linda Jackson (Timex) proved why she is considered one of the foremost climbers in the world by overcoming an early crash to solo to victory in the hilltop finish of Stage 8, the HP Personal LaserJet Road Race, in 2 hours, 54 minutes and 7 seconds. America's top rider, Mari Holden (HP Toner), finished second, 46 seconds off the pace, in a time of 2 hours, 54 minutes and 53 seconds. Overall race leader Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly), herself overcoming an early flat, finished 7th, one minute and 14 seconds back.

Just 9 miles into the 66.2-mile mountainous stage, Jackson, in an attempt to avoid a 25- rider pile-up, swerved onto the shoulder and into 3 inches of gravel and crashed, sustaining massive road rash (abrasions) over the majority of her right side. Jackson's victory moves her into 2nd place overall, 1 minute and 11 seconds behind Longo-Ciprelli.

"We let her (Longo-Ciprelli) intimidate us at Banner (Summit, Stage 2)...Darn if I was going to let Longo intimidate me again," said Jackson. "After the crash, I had to ignore the pain and how much I hurt and keep going."
