National Track Cycling Team Tryouts at Forest City Velodrome

For the first time in over 30 years, a National Track Cycling Team Camp is coming to London, Ontario.

The Canadian Cycling Association, Sports Canada and the Forest City Velodrome are pleased to announce a camp to identify the pool of cyclists for the National Cycling Team aiming at the London Olympics in 2012 and 2016.

The National Team Training Camp will run for four days beginning Wednesday, January 28th to Saturday, January 31st. The Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario will be the home for these Olympic hopefuls, as they demonstrate speed and skill on the tight turns of the FCV.

Over 50 athletes will be attending the camp from across Canada. The youngest prospect is 15 years old. Many Forest City Velodrome regulars will be involved with the camp.

Quebec will have a large contingent of athletes, with 17 High Performance Racers attempting to make the squad.

The Atlantic Provinces will be sending six prospects, including professional road racer, Dustin McBurnie.

Forest City Velodrome coordinator, Rob Good, indicated that Ontario has not had the opportunity to hold a National Track Cycling Camp of this size in over 30 years. The FCV is one of two indoor tracks in Canada. The other indoor velodrome is in Vancouver, BC.

We are very proud to give this opportunity to the cycling community in London. The growth of our youth and women's programs will show at the camp, with nearly 50% of the riders coming from Ontario.

During the training camp there will be two sessions daily. The under 19 year old prospects take to the velodrome from 11 am to 2 pm. The Elite Men and Women will do their workouts in the evening from 6 pm to 10 pm. All sessions are open to the public. Admission is a donation to the velodrome.

In addition to the training camp all of the athletes will be racing over the weekend at the first major track race of 2009. Winter Nationals begins Friday, January 30th and continues all day Saturday, January 31st.
