The Cuba Project And Recycle Your Bicycle Program
Press release

Recycle your Bicycle is an independent, volunteer, and non-profit organization started by Harold Hosein in April 2002 with a goal to collect unwanted bicycles and parts in Canada, and send them to Cuba, thus diverting them from our landfill sites and putting them to good use.

Bicycles in Cuba are a much used and needed source of transportation. They are a vital and essential travel vehicle allowing cheap and convenient transportation, specially in rural areas.

Some of the bikes can actually be turned into a source of income for people by modification to provide a bici-taxi service, something we who live in big urban cities may not think about.

In addition, many parts that are donated, tires tubes, gears, are all used by these very resourceful people. When they receive a container load, the bikes are assigned a number and each person wanting a bike draws a number from a "hat" to receive the bicycle that corresponds with that number. This process equates a lottery system and ensures no favoritism in distribution.

Recycle your Bicycle depends on fundraising organized by volunteers and donors to help pay for the container shipments. To-date the RYB program has shipped close to 3000 bikes.

Due to the destruction by the 2008 hurricanes, the Orion Foundation's Cuba Project also sends other essential items such as medical equipment, beds, clothing, text books, computers, household items and building supplies. To date the foundation has shipped 23 containers of materials to help the people of Cuba rebuild their shattered lives.

Your help is desperately needed to help the people of Cuba.

Every little bit helps us reach the most vulnerable.
