Peter McCaffery, a BC Masters race director, avid cyclist and promoter of cycling, especially for youth, was struck from behind by a pick-up truck near the Nanaimo Airport last Thursday (March 12th). He was taken to Victoria General Hospital with multiple and serious injuries. His riding mate Dave Kenny, a BC Masters racer, said Peter was headed for surgery on his spine March 16th.

Dave said he was about 25 or 30 metres ahead of Peter at the top of a hill on Cedar Rd. when he heard the impact and screeching of tires. The driver told Dave he didn't see the cyclists even though it was a clear daylight, with the sun behind the riders. The pair were on their way home during a 100-km training ride.

Two years ago Peter started a summer Thursday-night time trial series on Nanaimo Lakes Rd. It has attracted a growing number of riders. Last year, he staged two highly successful BC Masters races in the Nanaimo area, and has scheduled more events for us in May. (Editor's Note: Peter is also well known in Ontario for having started the Midweek Club and racing series)

"This is shocking news," said Master President Bill Yearwood. "I hope some of our riders will make time to pay Peter a visit. He has our total support for complete and speedy recovery."
