5th Annual West Wicomico Watermelon Wide

Salisbury, MD, July 3, 1999 - The fifth annual "West Wicomico Watermelon Wide" (formerly the Pemberton-Whitehaven Double Cross Bike Tour) will take place on September 11, 1999. This scenic bike tour originates at Pemberton Historical Park in Salisbury, MD, home of 18th century manor house and plantation, Pemberton Hall. It offers 3 routes ( 32-mile, 51-mile, and 64 mile) which highlight the history and beauty of Western Wicomico County. Novice bikers will enjoy this opportunity to ride on the flat terrain of Maryland's Eastern Shore. The bike tour travels past historic sites such as the 300 year-old Whitehaven Ferry, and through quaint towns on the historic West side of Salisbury. A picnic lunch and watermelon seed spitting contest follow the ride. Pemberton Historical Park is located just off of Pemberton Drive in Salisbury, MD. From Route 50, turn West onto Nanticoke Road. Bear left onto Pemberton Drive. The park is approximately 3 miles on the left.

Registration for the bike tour is through the Wicomico Civic Center Box Office, 500 Glen Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21804. Register by mail by requesting a brochure at (410) 548-4900 ext. 116.
