Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 14,000 2009 bikes due to a potential handlebar failure, which could be a fall hazard for riders.  So far, Specialized has received two reports of handlebar failure during use.

The affected models were sold between June 2008 and February 2009 through authorized Specialized dealers, including Canadian retailers.  The recall involves HL model handlebars on the following 2009 Specialized bicycles: Cross Trail Comp, Myka HT Comp, Myka HT Elite, Rockhopper, Rockhopper Comp and Rockhopper Comp 29. The model number of the HL handlebar is ALR-13 NTFOV and is located underneath the right hand grip of the handlebar.

Specialized Canada reports that a limited number of the affected models were sold in Canada, and that a service advisory has been issued to all dealers, who have been contacting customers.  Dealers have been sent replacement handlebars.

Consumers should stop riding the bikes and contact their Specialized dealer for a free replacement handlebar.
