Ontario Cup Youth Bicycle Race set for Chippawa Park

This Sunday, August 16th, boys and girls from across Ontario, aged 10 to 16, will be racing their bicycles around Chippawa Park in Welland ON.

“We’ve called this The Race of Future Champions”, states St Catharines Cycling Club president Paul Philp, “because we like to think that someone from this race will be a future cycling champion of Canada”.

With support from the City of Welland and sanctioned by the Ontario Cycling Association (OCA), this race gives opportunities for youth involvement in bicycle racing, and most importantly, lets youth experience the thrill and sense of accomplishment that bicycle racing offers.

The day consists of an Individual Time Trial around the park from 10 AM til noon, followed by a road race around the park in the afternoon.  The race is open to anyone 10 to 16 years of age.  A race license is not required.  Registration fee is $20, which includes a lunch if registered online.  Day of registration is also available.  The focus for the day is on participation and fun.  As Paul Philp said, “we got tired of the 30 and 40 year olds winning the sprints.  We thought that holding a local race just for youth would attract some young folks to take up the sport”.
