CCA National Track camp Los Angeles- Final Day

The final day of the September camp in Los Angeles presented the riders with some built in motivation for tired legs and minds. It had been three days of two a day sessions and so far the riders had ridden for eleven and a half hours so to have some incentive on the final day an omnium event was held for all riders.

This new version was dubbed the Northern Omnium, totalling four events, one gear used for all events, no aero bars for pursuit or 500m, a different format and a champions jersey up for grabs. The event consisted of two three up sprints, a 2 km pursuit, a 10 km scratch race and a 500m time trial. Lowest total points won on the day.

The sprint rounds were set up and winners would face winners, second place second place and third place third place for the second rides and final positions of first through ninth. The main final featured Scott Mulder taking the win over Adam Thuss and Monique Sullivan.

After a minimal five minutes recovery 2 km individual pursuits were started. Jakob Schwingboth posted the fastest time of 2:35.01 with Adam Thuss in second just a second behind, Mark MacDonald in third another second back and Allison Beveridge in fourth with another new personal best of 2:38.54. In fairness Allison did have full aero equipment for this second attempt of the week for a time. A very good time considering all the work she had done so far.

The 40 lap scratch race saw Mark win over Jacob and Adam. So after three events Thuss and Schwingboth were tied with 6 points each going into the final event, the 500m time trial. Scott Mulder took out the 500 with a 35.9 with Thuss clocking a 36.15, MacDonald 36.51, and Schwingboth a 36.94. With these results Thuss took the first ever Northern Omnium.

With all riders cooling down we packed up and headed off to the airport for various airlines to make our way home. The camp was a very successful start to a series of National Team camps in preparation for the upcoming track season and to the major games beyond.
