February 16/10 16:37 pm - FCV Training Camp

A hard day of training for 25 track cyclists at the Forest City Velodrome in London on Monday afternoon.  A special thank you to the Ontario Cycling Association and Ontario Trillium Foundation for making possible the series of 12 Camps leading up to the summer road season and National Track Championships in 2010.

The 138m Velodrome continues to develop track athletes for competition on both the road and track.  The skills portion of the camp on Monday centred around balance - riding as slowly as possible to make other riders have to unclip.  During the drill even the quickest riders at the FCV were having trouble going slow enough to match the balance of young 15 year old racer Daniel McKenzie-Picot. Daniel was able to just crawl along the blue line - making many of the elite and masters have to unclip.

The riders were put through several very tough skill building exercises -  including a 1,200m drill that many riders had a hard time figuring out how to even out their speed, strength and endurance.  In the end all the riders were able to conserve enough energy to 'light up' their speed toward the final segment of the camp.

The riders finished the camp off with a race strategy skills session that included a team effort to work over their fellow competitors…. In the end all the riders were able to come up with a strategy to out fox their opponents.

Next in the series of development camps at the FCV will be this weekend, Saturday February 20th “Madison introduction and skills”.  There is room for 20 riders.  Cadets and Juniors are invited to come early and take advantage of the Youth training session at 3pm on Saturday.
