April 16/10 14:02 pm - BVC MayDays cancelled

The Scheduled MayDays event at the Burnaby velodrome will be cancelled this year for a number of reasons.  The main reason being is that there is a full road calendar at that time and we are unsure of the turnout, as well as the most important day of the year happens that week-end.....Mother's Day.

One other contributing factor in the cancellation is the lack of a race organizer willing to take on the event.

The BVC has had a few very qualified race organizers over the past few years come in and volunteer to put on some first class events from the Sixday to smaller events in both the spring and fall seasons.  At this time the board feels that we should be looking at hiring or sourcing out the organization of two to three weekend events.  Our regular calendar dates have been early May and mid November and our agreement with the Harry Jerome facility also allows us a summer weekend as well as a winter block for events.  The winter block has traditionaly been occupied by the SixDay but that has unfortunately been plagued by the economic downturn as well as "roof downturn" for the past few years.  Plans are in effect to bring the race back for 2010 and a race organizer is already working hard on that event.

I am sending out a call for an individual or organization to put forward a plan to help "brand" 2-3 strong track cycling events for the BVC.  If you are an interested party, please contact me at scott@burnabyvelodrome.ca with your proposal.
