The Cycledelia Race Club of Saskatoon is sponsoring the premiere cycling event of the season, “Bikes on Broadway 2010 –20th Anniversary Stage Race, Sask Cup Road Series #2”. on May 22-24.  As the largest road bicycle race in Saskatchewan and one of the largest in western Canada, attending Bikes on Broadway on the May long weekend has become an institution for competitive cyclists throughout the Prairie Provinces. It is a very exciting time for our local cyclists!

Bikes on Broadway attracts approximately 150 racers from Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. This event is a traditional 3-day stage race, Saskatchewan’s own mini version of the world’s best known stage race, the “Tour de France”, consisting of a time trial, road race and criterium (“crit”). A stage race is a multi-leg event in which the overall winner is the rider in each category with the lowest total time for all stages.

This event is known throughout the Prairie Provinces, as a ‘qualifier” race for provincial championships. Many of the athletes participating in this event go on to compete at the national, world and professional cycling level.

One of Saskatchewan’s local athletes, Julia Garnet of Saskatoon, is the Canadian National Junior Women’s’ Time Trial Champion for 2009, which qualified her to compete in the World Junior Championships in Russia. Julie has been named to a Canadian Cycling Association development card.

Another one of Saskatchewan’s local athletes, Ken Orr of Churchbridge, was honoured with the award as the Saskatchewan Master Athlete of the Year for 2009. Ken was also very successful at the World Master Games in Sydney, Australia in 2009, bringing home 3 Gold, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal.

One other amazing athlete is Arnold Boldt, who competed in Italy at the World Para-Cycling Championships for Team Canada.

Also, Alex Wrubleski of Regina, who is a Road National Champion, is currently riding professionally on the WEBCOR women’s team and was a member of the Canadian Olympic Cycling Team in 2008. Alex remains on the A list for carded athletes on a National level.

A Kiddies Crit has been added that allows children 12 years of age and under to experience the thrill of racing, which they have only been able to watch in the past. This year we have also expanded a category that was new last year, CAT 6 Open (15 years & older) and CAT 6 Youth (14 years & younger), to attract novice participants and youths who want to experience the thrill of racing for the first time.

Continuous support of the race from local bike shops; Bike Doctor, Doug’s Spoke N’ Sport, Bruce’s Cycle Works, Bike Universe, City Park Cycle, 2nd Nature and food outlets; Caffé Sola, Starbucks, Extreme Pita and Booster Juice, has been vital to the growth of the race. As our event gains recognition, we have also garnered the support of many community businesses such as Saskatchewan Blue Cross, Novakoski Quality Collision and the Pathfinders. In the past, annual donation packages have exceeded $5,000, which is distributed amongst race winners and for volunteer appreciation. A huge bouquet of thanks also goes out to our volunteers that tirelessly support our event each year to ensure a safe, well organized race, something we are well known for. These volunteers are the heart of our race and without their help, it just would not happen.

We encourage spectators to come out and cheer our riders on to victory.

. Road Race Sunday, May 23, 2010 - Batoche National Historic Site from Noon- 4:00 PM

. Criterium Monday, May 24, 2010 - Broadway Ave & 11th St from 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
