June 27/10 10:27 am - Road Nationals: Women's Road Race UPDATES

Another beautiful sunny day in Edmonton with very little wind and blue skies.  Temperature is currently 18 C and the predicted high is 26.

 

The organizers have managed to get a complete shut down of all roads involved in the race today.

Women will do 9 laps of the 13 km course for a total of 117 km.  This is a change from the announced (technical guide) distance of 127

 

There are 58 riders on the official start list (see link below)

A slight delay in the start...  Tara Whitten has a flat

 

10:54 am  EDT

 

Lap 1. Lex Albrecht (Cascades-ABC Cycles) attacked right at the start and now, on the 2nd climb (~7 km), has a 3 min gap on the peloton

Lap 2.  On the first climb, Albrecht is still away with Cara Gillis (Specialized D4W/Bicycle Haus) chasing at 1:50 and the peloton at 2:50

 

Jenny Trew (Specialized Mazda Samson G Conseil) has had a mechanical

Anne Guzman (Team Nanoblur-Gears) has had a flat but quickly rec'd a repair and is back in the bunch.  Trew has not managed to get back on

Lap 3.  At the start of the 3rd lap: Albrecht is still away with Gillis at 2:20 and the peloton at 3:05

Midway through the 3rd lap - Gillis will son be back in the pelton - she is only about 30 sec in front.  Gap to

Albrecht is 2:55 and the peloton does not seem to concerned. Denise Ramsden (Team Kenda) has some problem with her drerailleur (?) and is getting some assistance on the fly from the mechanical support vehicle

 About to start Lap 4 - Albrecht is 2:25 in front of Gillis who has managed to pull nearly another 30 seconds away from the peloton  - now at 3:20 behind the leader

Lap 4 toward the end - Gillis has been caught by the peloton, who appear to have woken up, and the gap to Albrecht is 2:55

 

12:08 pm EDT

 

Lap 5 just past the feedzone and the gap is 2:35.  Tara Whitten (Specialized Mazda Samson G Conseil) is chasing back on after a crash at the feedzone

Whitten is now back in the peloton

On the 2nd climb - Denise Ramsden (Team Kenda) has attacked

Late in lap 5 and the gap is now down to 1:10.  The pelton is stretched out in a long line as they chase hard

Lap 6 - midway through - Krystal Jeffs (Team Nanoblur-Gears) has joined Albrecht at the front but the gap to the peloton is 30 seconds.

Anne Samplonius (Team Vera Bradley Foundation) has attacked on the 3rd climb, but wwas quickly swarmed

Lap 7 - As they start the lap the break is caught and the peloton is all together

 

Correction -break has not been caught. The peloton slowed just before the end of the 6th lap and the  gap is 20 sec

On the first climb and NOW they are all together

Erinne Willock (Webcor Builders) has been pushing the pace on the climbs getting a bit of a gap and forcing the others to chase.  Riders are starting to struggle

On the 3rd climb - Karol-Ann Canuel (Equipe Vienne Futuroscope) and Tara Whitten (Specialized Mazda Samson G Conseil) have attacked and gone past Willock

Lap 8 - Bunch all together and they are on the first climb.  Audrey Lemieux (ESGL-93) has been dropped from the bunch

On the 2nd climb - Anne Samplonius (Team Vera Bradley Foundation) has attacked and now has a 6 sec gap.

Samplonius is caught on 3rd climb and  immediately there is a counter attack by Willock

Last lap -  As they start the final lap the peloton is all together

NOTHING happening - riders just busy watching/waiting. Seems they have decided to all sprint at the end?
