August 9/10 13:00 pm - Rollin May Ride Quebec ProTour Races with National Team

Quebec media have been reporting recently that Dominique Rollin's Cervelo Test Team has declined their invitation to the Quebec City and Montreal races, and thus Rollin would not among the starters - a huge blow for Rollin, local fans and organizers.

The team pulled out because the organizers would not pay airfare costs, to which the organization pointed out that they are required to pay for ProTour teams, but not Pro Continental teams (such as Cervelo, BMC and others).  They offered to cover all expenses except airfare (as they will for all Pro Continental teams), but could make a special exception for Cervelo.

It now appears that Rollin may be able to race after all - his team has agreed to allow him to race for the National-SpiderTech combined squad, so the Canadian Cycling association has added him to the long list of athletes from whom the team will be chosen.  The long list can be seen HERE.

The official announcement from the CCA:

Canadian professional cyclist Dominique Rollin (Boucherville, QC) received the green light from his professional cycling team, Cervélo Test Team, to compete at the 2010 UCI Pro Tour events in Quebec and Montreal this upcoming September.

The Canadian Cycling Association added Rollin, who has been riding for a professional team since 2007, to the Canadian National team "selection pool" roster, which could allow him to be selected to the team and start the races.

The selection pool is a long list of athletes from which the Canadian Cycling Association will select the athletes representing the Canadian National Team powered by SpiderTech at the Grand Prix Cycliste for the events in Québec and Montréal.

The Canadian National Team powered by SpiderTech will be announced on August 16th, 2010. The riders will be selected on various selection criteria, including their performances throughout the summer.

Earlier this month, it has been reported that officials from the Cervélo Test Team would not be entering its team in the event, a team that includes Rollin.

Other Canadian riders expected to take the start of the two events are Ryder Hesjedal (Victoria, BC), seventh at the 2010 Tour de France, with his professional team Garmin-Transitions. Michael Barry (Toronto, ON), eighth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, is also expected to enter with his team, Team Sky.

In UCI Pro-Tour events, the hosting nation has the opportunity to enter its National Team. Canada has announced a partnership, earlier this summer, with the only Canadian UCI-registered team, SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy, to promote the development of elite road cycling in Canada.
