April 1/11 6:57 am - Steve Bauer to Return to Competition?

Retired Canadian star Steve Bauer himself admits that he would not have countenanced the idea six months ago, but with the return of American rival Alexi Grewal to the peloton, Bauer is seriously considering a return to racing in time for the Quiznos Challenge in Colorado, this coming August.

Grewal, who came out of retirement this spring, and has stated his goal is the race the major stage race in Colorado, beat Bauer for the gold medal in the men's road race in the 1984 Olympics, in Los Angeles.  Bauer went on to a stellar career as a European pro, while Grewal struggled for a few years before dropping out of sight.

"I've been riding with the boys regularly," admitted Bauer, referring to the riders on his Pro Continental SpiderTech powered by C10 squad.  The 50-plus Bauer, who we saw recently in Europe, does look very trim and fit, but is he up to racing at this level?

"We won't know until I do it, but I surely would like the chance to beat Alexi," commented Bauer.  "I've put out the challenge to some of the other 7-11 and Motorola guys from back in the day, who did the Coors Classic when it was the big Colorado race.  So far, the only one who has said 'maybe' is Alex [Stieda]."

Bauer hasn't committed to a firm date to a return, but Tour de Beauce is a strong possibility.
