Results from the 5th race in the US Crits Speedweek, the Spartanburg Regional Classic, held on May 6th in Spartanburg, SC

Women

Jennifer Purcell (Crumpton Cycles), was able to locate the chink in the Colavita squad's armor and score a big victory for herself in the women's race.

With the departure of overall leader Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita), the women's Speedweek peloton naturally sensed that this was their opportunity to assert themselves in Spartanburg. Early protagonists included Tiffany Pezzulo (Primal/MapMyRide), and Anne Samplonius (Rouse Bicycles). Samplonius was able to capitalize on her team's continual aggressiveness to achieve some separation from the rest of the field for several laps and collect a fair amount of race primes.

But the Colavita/Forno d'Asolo team has been used to winning all week long, and in the second half of the race, they did their best to organize themselves and regain control. Beaufort Memorial Cycling Classic winner Rushlee Buchanan made a last minute bid to take the win, but the combined strength of Rouse and Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) disrupted their effort. The resulting bunch sprint was up for grabs, and it was Purcell that emerged out of the darkness to end Colavita's unbroken string of 11 consecutive Speedweek wins. Van Gilder held on for a second place finish that would put her atop the overall, and Rouse's Christina Gokey-Smith rounded out the podium in third.

Men

UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team's Jake Keough and Hilton Clarke Finish 1st and 3rd in the Spartanburg Regional Classicmen's podium
Continuing their dominant performance in the USA Crits Speed Week, the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team's Jake Keough and Hilton Clarke finished first and third respectively tonight in the 7th Annual Spartanburg Regional Classic in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Tonight's win is Keough's third on the season and the Blue Train's sixth overall this year. The Team has secured 18 overall podiums since the season began.

Reflecting on his third win in less than seven days, Keough said, "The Team rode extremely well tonight. I felt super strong and my sprinting legs are just starting to come around. We are now dialing in the lead out and making minor tweaks to perfect it. The guys on this Team work so hard every race to put one of us in a position to deliver a victory and I'm glad I was able to do that tonight."

With 10 laps to go, the Blue Train began lining up and one lap later, the eight-man squad from Team UnitedHealthcare took control of the race and never looked back.

"We saw other teams throwing quite a bit at us late in the race, especially Kenda/5-hour Energy and Exergy," said General Manager and Team Director, Mike Tamayo. "I can't say enough about how these guys just keep coming together. We really have something special here. This unit consistently does what is required of them and when you do that, good things happen."
