World Cup Calendar Changes

Lausanne, SUI - 10 December 1999

DOWNHILL VENUE CHANGES FOR 2000 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP

The UCI announced today that two new venues had been added to the schedule for the 2000 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup replacing venues previously announced earlier in the year. The changes, however, do not mean a change of dates. The new venues will be hosting their events on the previously advertised weekends and will therefore not affect the overall UCI Calendar.

- Round 5 of the Downhill/Dual which was due to take place in Squaw Valley, California will now take place in Vail, Colorado

- Round 6 of the Downhill/Dual which was taking place in Vail is now taking place in Arai Mountain, Japan

Squaw Valley, which withdrew from Season 2000 mainly due to financial reasons is essentially replaced by Arai Mountain, home of the popular 1998 World Cup Finals, and winner of a UCI Rainbow Award for the Downhill/Dual event of the year. With the Vail event graciously moving forward a weekend, the travel path for most of the athletes is not disrupted, and the national calendar dates of other nations are not affected. The Japanese organisers who are conscious of the costs of travelling to their country have agreed to assist the UCI Trade Teams in various ways to assure their attendance at the event.

The other change is that Downhill/Dual #2 which was scheduled to take place in Nevegal, is now taking place in Italy's premier ski resort, Cortina. Both are located in the area of Belluno, Italy, so the relocation is not a major exercise for the organisers. The weekend that the World Cup Downhill/Dual takes place in Cortina is also the same weekend that the classic road race Giro d'Italia will be passing through this resort, making for a spectacular weekend of cycling in the Cortina.

Both these changes will provide the UCI World Cup with 15 excellent sites in 2000.
