Kevin Massicotte (Devinci/Nativo) won the 62 km battle in 34 degree Celsius heat through the countryside of Kingston this weekend at the J&J Kingston Trophy in a time of 3:02.

The selection went early when Massicotte along with Zach Winn broke away from the rest of the field shortly into the first and most technical part of the course. Coming into the first, of 3, Neutral Tech/Feed Zones Winn stopped and Massicotte carried on taking the lead. They came back together shortly and traded turns at the front for the rest of the race. With 1k to go it was looking like a two up sprint, however the decision was made on the slightly downhill cornfield run to the hairpin turn to the finish. Massicotte pulled away and Winn was unable to respond as he had removed teeth from his big chainring on a rock, making it un-usable, and was out geared to the line.

Shortly after, John Slaughter came in for a strong 3rd place after riding a steady pace throughout the day.

Riders throughout the day enjoyed the unique course with no real climbs but lots of technical features and purpose built single track through a variety of farms interspersed with sections of tractor path.

The finish line brought a pool to cool down in and a great BBQ for all registered riders.  Relaxing around the pool was a great way to wait for the rest of the riders before the poolside swim-up/cannon-ball-off podium presentation of the Apogee Leaders Jerseys.

Special mention must be given to our Lantern Rouge of the day. 65 year-old Garnett Johnson of Carleton Place rode all day through the heat and multiple mechanicals to finish in a time of 6:06 to show everyone what tough really means.

Thanks to all participants for helping to make the great race a lot of fun and we look forward to riding with you at the provincial marathon championships on August 14.

Thanks to our sponsors Norco, Hammer Nutrition, Joyride150, Finish Line and Apogee

Next up: Ontario Marathon Championships: Ontario Marathon Challenge 3 at  Mansfield on August 14th
