The first stage of the Tour de Snowy was held on a scorching Saturday afternoon.

For the first few laps of the 33 lap circuit not much was going aside some few attacks by riders probably wanting to stretch there legs and feel out the pack.

One move came after 7 laps that could have been dangerous for the overall GC. This break was 3 strong and was composed of Tracy Gaudry, who is positively going for the overall title. My worries were over after two laps when the field caught the three women apparently not wanting to cooperate.

With around 15 to go, Miryam Melchers of the Dutch team took off solo with her teammates working well to control the pack behind her. The gap eventually grew to a max of 33 seconds with no team wanting assume the chase. Everyone seemed content to see her go and for the Canadians it was not the day to show off their assets.

In the last lap of the race with the Dutch girl still in front, the gap had dropped to 14 seconds and would stay that way when Melchers crossed the finish line.

With the time bonuses, Melchers takes the lead, 19 seconds ahead of of Anna Wilson who won the pack sprint and 24 seconds on Mari Holden who finished third.

Todays results are no worry when you think of the grueling stages to come...

It's that time of the year again. Every year, the UBC Cycling Club & Team have a fundraising party to get all cyclists together and celebrate the sport that we enjoy so much. This year, the fundraising party will take place at Fred's Tavern on Tuesday March 14th.

Because of these fundraising, we are able to bring new people into the sport, organize a variety of events such as riding clinics, bike maintenance clinics, seminars, the list goes on... Without it, there would be one less cycling team in the racing circuit around BC.

So please, come and support us, also it will be a great time! Tickets are $5 each, and it includes two free drinks! What a great deal! And I'm going to be there, another reason to join us ;-) You will meet many new friends who enjoy different disciplines of cycling (cross country racers, downhillers, rec. riders, and don't forget the roadies!). And for those of you who go to Peg's Hill's training session on Tuesday night, this is an excellent way to recover after a hard ride! ;-)

If you are on UBC campus, come by the cycling club office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 12:30pm and 3:30pm for tickets. Our office number is SUB 107B. If you are off campus, please let me know how many tickets you would like to buy and I will send people to bring tickets to you. Tell all your friends! I look forward to see all of you on March 14th!
