The Canadian team of Junior track Athletes arrived in Guatemala, with all luggage and bikes arriving on time. Some of the 16 athletes (14 with no international experience) had a tough first day. With jet lag in their legs the light spin on the 250m concrete track in Guatemala City was welcome relief.
Eric Johnstone (Alberta) commented, "this experience so far has been very valuable. Just to see all the counties here arriving at the track and seeing how fast they can go is a real eye opener". "In my events we have a real shot at medals this week, it makes all the hard work training over the winter worth the effort". Johnstone competes in the Individual Pursuit (IP) on the first day of competition, Monday.
Also on Monday's schedule is the always popular Men's Team Sprint. The team of Adrian George, Joakim Albert, Vincent DeHaitre are expecting big things as the sprint events ramp up early in the week. DeHaitre, said "the team is 110% committed to winning a medal here in Guatemala". "We have been working together for a week and everything is coming together, now is the time to execute".
4 events kick off the 2012 competition on Monday at 9am, Men's individual Pursuit (Adam Reddy & Eric Johnstone), Women's 500m TT (Audrey Labrie & Kristen Sears), Men's Scratch Race (Alex Pinard & Mark-Antoine Noel)... as well as the men's team sprint (George, Albert & DeHaitre).
