Over 80 Scarborough youth, aged 10 to 18, received new bikes and helmets at the 5th Annual Malvern Youth Race on Saturday, May 26th. This event is a collaboration between the Ontario Cycling Association, the City of Toronto Community programs, the 42 Toronto Police Division, the Terry Family, and The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation. All parties involved share the common goal of getting more kids on bikes, and the day was successful at doing just that.

The day's racing started with the time trial, with the kids dashing down Brenyon Way and testing out their new bikes. Police officers accompanied and motivated the riders down the course as they attempted to post the fastest time. Once the time trial was completed, the kids were placed in their age categories for the next activity of the day - the road race. The riders took on the 1.8 kilometre course with enthusiasm and gave it everything they had. The small crowd cheered on the kids as they crossed the finish line and they were entertained with some close finishes. The day finished off with an awards ceremony where the Top 3 riders of each category race received a medal from the Police Commissioner, and the Terry Cup was awarded to the winning team by Justin Terry.

Long-time friends of the Ontario Cycling Association, the Terry family carries the legacy that George Terry, an elite cyclist who immigrated to Canada in the sixties, left behind after his passing in 2005. Terry was the first cyclist from Trinidad and Tobago to win a medal in an international cycling competition - a silver at the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games - and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame of Trinidad and Tobago. Terry overcame financial constraints to participate in the sport of cycling, and his family is dedicated to helping other young athletes do the same.

The Ontario Cycling Association would like to thank all the volunteers, parents and sponsors for making the Malvern Youth Race possible. We hope that this event has inspired many of these kids to not only become future cyclists, but to become successful in anything that they do in the future.

See you next year!
