June 16/12 14:27 pm - MTB Nationals - Elite and U23 Men XC Updates

The day has 'hotted up' with temps soaring into the high 20's now for the start of the U23 and Elite Men's race.

 

The course will be fast but very dusty as the men head out.  The Elite men will do a start loop and 6 laps, the U23 men, a start loop and 5 laps of the 5 km course.

 

Elite Men

 

Lap 1

Max Plaxton (Specialized Factory Racing) has the lead as they head out with Raphaël Gagné (Rocky Mountain /ProCycle) in 2nd and Geoff Kabush (Scott -3Rox Racing) 3rd

 

2:41 pm

Mid lap

Group of 5 now at front with a gap on rest of field.  Geoff Kabush (Scott -3Rox Racing), Max Plaxton (Specialized Factory Racing),
Derek Zandstra (Scott 3 Rox Racing), Cameron Jette (Scott -3Rox Racing), Raphaël Gagné (Rocky Mountain /ProCycle)

 

Lap 2 - 247 pm

Heading out on the 2nd lap and now 3 at front:  Geoff Kabush (Scott -3Rox Racing), Max Plaxton (Specialized Factory Racing), Raphaël Gagné (Rocky Mountain /ProCycle)

 

Midway 2:26 pm

3 leaders now have 40 sec on Zandstra chasing alone.  At 1 min are Cameron Jette (Scott -3Rox Racing), Graham Torrie (Bike Bros/TCR) and Peter Glassford (Trek Canada)

 

Lap 3

Midway  3:12pm

Kabush and Plaxton have dropped Gagne, now at 20 sec.  Zandstra at 1:45, Jette and Glass together at 2:20

 

Lap 4  3:23 pm

Plaxton and Kabush still doing battle at front.  Gagne  now 30 sec back

 

Lap 5

3:33 pm

Kabush got a bit of a gap on Plaxton when MP slowed to take on fuel.  But they are now back together again at the front.  Gagne is fading further and is now 1 min back.

 

Lap 6  3:46 pm

As they start the last lap  Plaxton attacks and has 20 sec on Kabush.  Gagne has started to crack and Zandstra is beginning to make time on him

 

The heat seems to be affecting a lot of riders

 

 

U23 Men

 

Lap 1

Mitch Bailey (Team Ontario - Trek Canada) leading Daniel Varga (Team Ontario/Opus/OGC) and Andrew Lespérance (Norco Factory Team)

 

Midway  2:46

Group of 5 away. Jérémy Martin (Rocky Mountain /ProCycle), Léandre Bouchard (Cyclone dAlma/Devinci), Mitch Bailey (Team Ontario - Trek Canada), Andrew Lespérance (Norco Factory Team), Evan Guthrie (Cycling BC/Rocky Mtn Factory)

 

 

Lap 2

Midway

Jérémy Martin (Rocky Mountain /ProCycle), Mitch Bailey (Team Ontario - Trek Canada),& Léandre Bouchard (Cyclone dAlma/Devinci) have 30 sec on Andrew Lespérance (Norco Factory Team)

 

Lap 3

Midway

Bailey and Martin away. Bouchard at 12 sec

 

Lap 5

Bouchard has attacked and now leads by 10 sec Bailey and Martin
