August 12/12 7:15 am - Vaughters Admits to Doping

Posted by Editoress on 08/12/12

Jonathan Vaughters, former professional racer and CEO of Slipstream Sports, which owns the Garmin-Sharp team of Ryder Hesjedal, has admitted that he doped during his career. Vaughters wrote an Op-Ed piece in today's New York Times saying that he did it during his professional career, including when he was on Lance Armstrong's US Postal squad.

Vaughters says that he deeply regrets it, which is one of the reasons his team is so rigorous with its anti-doping policy, but that at the time it was the only way to get results.

In the article he states "I’ve been there, and I know. I chose to lie over killing my dream. I chose to dope. I am sorry for that decision, and I deeply regret it. The guilt I felt led me to retire from racing."

It should be noted, however, that Vaughters is extremely short on specifics, or on who else was involved, and his main message seems to be about a dope-free culture for the future of sport, but not about delving into the past.
