December 4/12 18:36 pm - National Cycling Centre Hamilton Tri-Cycle School Program

Posted by Editoress on 12/4/12

The CHCH National Cycling Centre Hamilton (NCCH) is running an exciting program in the Hamilton area with local school boards. The Tri-Cycle program goes into schools with four Computrainers and a multi-rider system to test hundreds of students a day on a short time trial ride to identify talent and get students interested in cycling. Head coach Rick Lee says that the program will test a staggering 10,000 students throughout the Hamilton-Wentworth Board this winter.

The program has already shown success, with current Junior Women's National Time Trial champion Saskia Kowalchuck identified through testing in her school a couple of years ago.

Kowalchuck and former NCCH rider Ben Perry (who has signed for next season with the Lotto Belisol U23 team) have been hired by the NCCH to run the program at schools through the region.

Students undergo testing

After a brief introduction and explanation to each class, four students at a time line up to take the one kilometre test. It simulates flats, a descent and a climb. The students can see their progress on the big screen monitor as they 'race' each other. At the end of each class, those identified as having cycling potential are given a sheet outlining what the Centre offers, and an invitation to visit with their parents to find out more about getting involved in cycling programs at the NCCH. Any student, regardless of their test results, can also visit and sign up for programs. The NCCH offers both Road and Mountain Bike programs, plus a racing team.

Ben Perry suggested a visit to the program when we were at the Road Worlds and, after coordinating with the Centre, the school and teachers involved, we drove down to Bellmoore Elementary School in Binbrook, Ontario, to spend the afternoon observing some sessions. Watch our video for a glimpse of the program and interviews with Rick Lee and participants in the program.

We want to thank Ben, Saskia, Rick and the staff and students from Bellmoore for allowing us to participate in this exciting program.
