Drew Mechielsen, racing the Elite Women's category, was the only Canadian to qualify for Moto competion at the first round of the BMX World Cup yesterday in Manchester, Great Britain.
Following three heats of racing, the top-24 women move onto the Motos, with Mechielsen qualifying 18th after finishing 4th, 3rd and 5th in her heats. The other Canadian woman at the World Cup, Daina Tuchscherer, was third in her first heat but crashed in her second heat, not finishing, and did not start the third heat, to finish ranked 43rd overall.
In the Elite Men's competition no Canadian men qualified for the Motos, with the top 48 in qualification runs moving on (on aggregate results of three runs). Alex Tougas was the top ranked Canadian in 60th after finishing 5th, 3rd and 4th in his three heats - missing the Motos by one position. James Palmer was 72nd (3rd, 3rd, 7th), Brandon Reid 89th (6th, 6th, 4th) and James Brown 109th (6th, DNF, DNF).
