Velothon Edmonton, the newest addition to the International Cycling Union's (UCI) Velothon Majors circuit, unveiled unique course highlights and officially opened registration to the public today. Previously announced in the Spring, this unique, mass participation event hosted in "cycle iconic cities worldwide", as described by the UCI, will be hosted on September 5, 2016, in Alberta's capital city Edmonton, a host of the UCI 2.1 Tour of Alberta professional cycling race for four years.

The UCI Velothon Majors, which aims to create premier urban cycling events in major cities around the globe, including Wales, Berlin, Stockholm, Stuttgart - and now Edmonton - enables fans of the sport to experience "the pro-feeling". Participants in Edmonton can anticipate closed roads, feed stations, full-support and announcing by the same professional emcees of the Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial as a part of the professional standards and "pro-experience".

In a 20 kilometre loop in the heart of Edmonton, stacked with both striking scenery and challenging aspects, Velothon Edmonton participants have the option to ride a shorter route 60 kilometre version (three loops) or a longer 100 kilometre version (five loops) of the closed course. Starting under the Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial banner in the heart of Edmonton at the iconic Churchill Square, participants will be able to descend through the historic and picturesque grounds of the Alberta Legislature, pass through Edmonton's stunning river valley and climb past the scenic Hawrelak Park, getting the chance to ride on some the Capital City's streets they likely have never had an opportunity to experience on two wheels, like the daunting curves of Groat Road. However, likely the most attractive aspect for true fans of the sport is being able to ride the majority of both the Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial's Stage 4 Individual Time Trial (ITT) and Stage 5 circuit in the Velothon Edmonton.

Additionally, families and youth will again have the opportunity to participate in the fourth annual public ride to raise funds for Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health at the ATB Financial Family Ride supporting CASA.

Starting and finishing in the same site as the professionals, Velothon Edmonton and ATB Financial Family Ride supporting CASA participants then have the opportunity to watch the professional cyclists compete on a portion of the very course they cycled a mere few hours prior during the Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial's Stage 5.

Special edition commemorative merchandise provided by United Cycle will be available for purchase.

Entry fees for the Velothon Edmonton experience are as low as $100.00. The ATB Financial Famaily Ride supporting CASA is free of charge for minors and only $25 for participants over age 18; however, participants are encouraged to raise funds to support mental health awareness.

More information on registration and details of the day can be found at TourofAlberta.ca/VelothonEdmonton.
