Olympic Men's Road Race - 239.40 km

Lap reports and Full Results

7pm -

The weather has improved and the men' race is scheduled to go off on time.

7:05pm -

...And they're off. 153 riders started today's 239.4 km (14laps) race.

7:50pm - First 2 laps

Easy does it! The road is still wet after a night of rain, thought it is not raining now. No one is taking any chances and the pack is still all together.

8pm - Lap 3

Columbian rider Victor Hugo Penna is off the front with a 20 second gap on the field. The pack is chasing, but not too hard.

It was reported that one of the Canadians (unknown) has crashed during lap 2.

8:55pm - Lap 5

At the end of lap 3, the pack was still all together, but crashes and mechanicals had taken a few riders out of contention: Lars Michaelsen (Den) was taken to the hospital.

Brian Walton was the Canadian who crashed earlier, but managed to get back on.

As the pack hits the 73 km mark (lap 5) 2 riders are off the front with a 48 second gap on the pack. Evgeny Wacker (Kgz) and Orlando Rodrigues (Por) are working well. The pack, with Walton and Wohlberg near the front are chasing, but not too hard.

9:10pm - Lap 6

At the beginning of lap 6 the 2 leaders Evgeny Wacker (Kgz) and Orlando Rodrigues (Por) had increased their lead over the peloton to nearly 1 minute. At the 1/4 way point they were joined by Polish rider Piotr Przydzial and the gap has increased to 1:30. At the end of the lap the gap was 1:40.

9:40pm - Lap 7

The 3 leaders have been joined by a 4th rider Remigijus Lupeikis (Ltu). At the beginning of lap 7 the peloton had narrowed the gap to 23 seconds and Lupeikis went across. The pack then backed off and let the gap increase to 1:37. There seems to be no worries in the pack as they seem to be rather easy going and relaxed as the 1/2 way point of the race approaches.

10pm - Lap 8

As the 4 leaders went through the start finish at the end of lap 7, they had 30 seconds on the peloton. The average speed has been 41km/hr, lap times vary, lap 7 was 25.21 minutes.

Not long into lap 8 the peloton picked up the pace and caught the 4 riders who were off the front.

The Canadians are still all in the pack. Brian Walton had to do a bike change after his crash earlier in the race.

10:25pm - Lap 9

5 riders (including Brochard, Abraham Olano (Esp), Serguei Outschakov (Ukr), Rolf Aldag (Ger) and Dmitri Konychev (Rus)) attacked and went clear at the end of lap 8, but were quickly caught by the peloton. The average speed increased to 42.5.

At the start of lap 9 a Norwegian rider, Kurt Asle Arvesen, has attacked and has a mere 9 seconds clear, but seems to be struggling in an ever increasing head-wind.

10:50pm - Lap 9

Arvesen has been joined by Marc Wauters (Bel), Andrei Kivilev (Kaz), Erik Dekker (Ned), Scott McGrory (Aus), Tyler Hamilton (USA) and Jens Voigt (Ger) and have put 20 seconds on the peloton.

At the front of the peloton Alex Zulle (Sui) is seen leading the chasers.

At the midway point in lap 9, Kivilev has dropped the other riders, but is heading alone into the headwind.

11:00pm - Lap 10 starts

Kivilev has been caught by 3 riders, Marc Wauters, Max Van Heeswijk (Ned) and Jens Voigt. The trio have a gap of 30 seconds and the beginning of lap 10. The pace of the race is rapidly increasing to 45.5km/hr.

11:20pm - Half way through lap 11

In lap 10 a group of 3 (Marc Wauters (Bel), Max Van Heeswijk (Ned) and Jens Voigt (Ger)) were off the front and at one point had a gap of 1:40 before the pack reeled them in. Now at the half way point of lap 11, the pack is basically all together. The Germans can still be seen prominently at the front. Eric Wohlberg has been seen staying fairly close to the front of the pack.

11:50 - Half way through lap 12

There is a group of 9 riders off the front.

Brian Walton and Czeslaw Lukaszewicz have both dropped out. Walton as the result of his crash earlier in the race. The two remaining Canadians - Fraser has been seen at the back of the pack, Wohlberg near the front.

Riders in the break: Fred Rodriguez (USA), Jaan Kirsipuu (Est). Scott McGrory (Aus), Henk Vogels (Aus), Laurent Jalabert (Fra), Nico Mattan (Bel) Axel Merckx (Bel), Paolo Bettini (Ita), Pavel Tonkov (Rus) & Michele Bartoli (Ita).

12:15am - Lap 13 - final lap about to start

A threesome (Jan Ullrich (Ger) , Andreas Kloeden (Ger) and Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) note: all Telekom temmates) is off the front with a 25 second gap on 2 chasers from Italy - Michele Bartoli & Paolo Bettini (Ita). Behind them is a group of 6 with George Hincapie, Axel Merckx etc. The Peleton is about 1:30 behind the leaders and is being led by Lance Armstrong.

12:25am - Lap 14

Ullrich, Kloeden & Vinokourov are still off the front and hammering to keep/increase the gap. The 2 italians have been caught by the chase group that has been joined by Armstrong. The peloton is well over a minute back.

Ullrich is now off the front w/ 3 km to go.

12:40am

Ullrich takes the gold
