Ontario Coaching Course

The Ottawa Bicycle Club is organizing a Level 1 Technical Road coaching course to be held in Ottawa towards the end of November. The course will most likely be on a Thursday night (3 hours), a Friday night (3 hours) and all day Saturday. If you are interested please contact the OBC office and leave your name, telephone number and/or e-mail address. We need a minimum of six participants to run the course so we are trying to determine if there is enough interest to proceed. We are coordinating with the OCA so watch the OCA web page for further details.

There are three parts to each level of NCCP coaching certification.
1. Theory, which is generic to all sports and can be taken at community colleges, etc.
2. Technical, which is specific to each sport, in this case road cycling..
3. Practical, which is your practical coaching experience (usually a year or more of actual experience coaching athletes).

Once you have completed all three components, you can become a certified (and qualified) coach and apply for a cycling coach's license. Please respond by November 7th if you are interested.

SRAM Shifts North American Manufacturing to Asia

Chicago, IL - Due to a significant drop in North American bicycle production, SRAM Corporation recently announced the sale of their Chihuahua, Mexico manufacturing facility.

Built by SRAM in June of 1997, the Chihuahua factory was intended to provide a more cost competitive supply facility to North American bicycle manufacturers. Distribution to bicycle manufacturers within Mexico, such as Huffy and Roadmaster was also an intended purpose of this facility.

Over the past few years, however, bicycle production in North America has decreased dramatically, due to competition with Chinese manufacturers. Various bicycle manufacturers have shifted production over seas and closed their North American facilities. Roadmaster announced the closing of their Mexico facility in January of this year, "Soon there after we made our decision," stated Jeff Shupe, Vice President of Manufacturing at SRAM, adding "The significant drop in North American bike production fell below the threshold to justify a factory there." SRAM Mexico was then sold on September 29, 2000 to an automotive sub contractor. It was due to the level of quality systems, including the ISO 9000 and QS 9000, that SRAM was given this sales opportunity.

Operations of the Chihuahua facility, which included injection molding, assembly and decoration of shifters and derailleurs will be moved to SRAM Taiwan and SRAM China. US Customers, who formerly conducted business with SRAM Mexico, will now be serviced out of Taiwan, while SRAM embraces the opportunity to grow relationships with manufacturers in Asia.
