January 5/01 2:28 am - Hughes Second, US Cutbacks, CC Awards Update

Hughes Second

Clara Hughes followed up her 4th place finish in the 3000M at the Canadian Long Track Speed Skating Championships in Calgary with a second in the 5000M. Hughes' time of 7:13.69 was just over 2 seconds slower than winner Kristina Groves. The combined results were enough to bump her up to 7th in the overall standings after 4 events.

U.S. Cycling Cutbacks

USA Cycling has dropped both their women's road coach and endurance track coach after post-Olympic funding cuts led to a shortfall in the organization's budget. In total, nearly 20% of staff were laid off or did not have contracts renewed.

CC Awards

There is less than 5 days of voting left for the Canadian Cyclist of the Year awards. In the men's voting there is a fairly tight battle developing between Roland Green and Gord Fraser, while Alison Sydor has a considerable lead over Genevieve Jeanson and Chrissy Redden for the women's award. In the Individual Performance category, Roland Green has a strong lead over Jeanson, Geoff Kabush and Lori-Ann Muenzer. However, we have seen things turn around dramatically before, so it is too soon to call anyone a winner. Be sure to register your vote by Noon EST January 10th. Just click on the button at the top of the page.
