Sea Otter About to Begin

We are sorry for the delay in publishing today - it has been a travel day, to Monterey, California for the start of the Sea Otter Classic tomorrow. We will be providing complete coverage through the next 4 days - road, cross-country, downhill and dual. Plus, Sea Otter is known for product intros and test goodies that are unveiled here. We will be trying to cover as much as possible between now and Sunday evening.

Tomorrow is the start of the 4 stage road event, with an individual time trial in the morning, and a criterium in the afternoon. Everything gets started at 9:00 am Pacific time, noon Eastern. The cross-country mountain bikers start on Friday with a time trial (the first of 3 stages over 3 days). The Dual finals are Saturday, and the Downhill Sunday.

Canada has good representation on the both the men's and women's sides, although some key players will be missing on the road. Roland Green will be racing mountain bike, so there is no chance of a repeat of his stellar ride at last weekend's Redlands Classic. All the other mountain bikers are missing also, including Ryder Hesjedal on the men's side and Chrissy Redden and Alison Sydor for the women (they are all here, just back on the dirt now).

Also missing will be last week's winner Genevieve Jeanson and her Rona team, plus Lyne Bessette (Saturn), who is out for about 6 weeks with a broken collarbone after her crash in stage 2 of Redlands. However, Canada will have Gord Fraser (Mercury), Michael Barry and Eric Wohlberg for Saturn, Mark Walters (Navigators), Charles Dione and Andrew Randell (7 Up/Colorado Cyclist), plus Dom Perras and Cory Lange (Marco Polo), Nat Faulkner (Kissena), and Svein Tuft, Jesse Keefer and Tony Zarsadias (Broadmark Captial). For the women it will be the Intersports team, Kim Davidge and possibly Clara Hughes for Saturn, Annie Gariepy on Autotrader.com, and Sue Palmer-Komar with Jane Cosmetics. Some riders are tentative, since final start lists were not available at this time.

The time trial is significantly tougher than in previous years - a 17 mile loop with 1950' feet of total climbing. The riders start and finish at the Laguna Speedway motor track, with a very nasty climb to the finish, which reaches a maximum of 16%! It will be interesting to see how Clara Hughes does (if she starts).
