Edmonton city council was told on Monday that the planned Coronation Community Recreation Centre, which includes a world-class level indoor velodrome, will face significant cost increases from when it was stated at $112 million in late 2018. City administrators said to councillors that the delay in starting the project from 2018 and issues related to the design of the facility have bumped the projected cost to $158 million.

In addition to the 250-metre indoor velodrome, the design includes a 400-metre running track. The proposed facility has seating for 750 spectators, and will be connected to an existing swimming pool, which would allow for year-round cycling and triathlon training, and could host international sporting events. It will also feature a fitness centre, multipurpose rooms and a child play space.

CBC reports that Dave Embury, with the Alberta Velodrome Association, told council nearly $1 million has already been raised, and said they have also worked with Cycling Canada to submit an application for a federal infrastructure grant. Local cycling and triathlon groups have committed to raising $4 million for the facility. "We're working very hard to bring forward capital monies to this to hold our side of the commitment," Embury said.

City staff will look into ways to reduce the cost or refinance the project, with Council to revisit the it during a budget debate this Fall. Construction is scheduled to begin next year.
