Tour of Willamette - Stage 3

The Intersports Cycling Team rode aggressively and intelligently in the 3rd stage of the Tour ofWillamette, to conserved the yellow jersey and consolidate Espeseth's lead in the overall. On a somewhat modified course from what was announced, the Intersports girls successfully controlled the field over the first 2 QOMs before AutoTrader's Sarah Ulmer and Intersports' Anne Samplonious rolled off the front for what would turn out to be the race winning break. Barely!! The duo collaborated well on the rolling windy roads outside of Cottage Grove and, with the 2 strongest teams in the race represented, little chase was mounted behind. The 2 cruised through the only time bonus sprint on the road where Samplonious took the honours. In the field, a massive lead out was prepared for Espeseth who took the 3rd place bonus seconds to consolidate her advantage. Up the road, the leaders had reached the final climb, 15km from the finish, and were showing signs of their long effort. With the field riding hard behind, the gap was sliced from 3 minutes to 1 minute by the top of the 5km climb. Partway down the descent, Samplonious suffered her second puncture of the day and Ulmer rode off to take the stage win. In the field, attacks and counter attacks were coming fast and furious as Samplonious was swept up 4km from the line. From there on it was a hot run in to the finish, where race leader Espeseth won the bunch sprint for second over Julie Young of AutoTrader. With the placing, Espeseth's lead in the yellow grew to 15 seconds over Berger of 800.com and 22 seconds onSmith. Saturday mornings 20km Time Trial will certainly sort out the winners.
