She finished a difficult mountain stage with a lead of 2'17" (unofficial time) over Lyne Bessette (CAN, Saturn Timex) and 2'37" over Kim Bruckner (USA, Saturn Timex). Counting her bonus points, Geneviève Jeanson now has a lead of 3'37" over Bessette (unofficial time) and a little more than four minutes over Bruckner.
The 113-km stage was very rugged and ended with a tough Category 1 climb. "I knew that everyone was expecting Geneviève to launch her attack at the foot of the last hill, about 10 km before the finish line," explained André Aubut. "Because of that, we decided to take them all by surprise and attack earlier. We chose a point somewhere around 20 km before the end for the attack."
The day’s mission for Manon Jutras, Gabriella Ferrat and Amy Jarvis was to ride the pack until that strategic point, to allow Geneviève Jeanson to save her strength inside the pack and to prevent any breakaways by the other top contenders. And they fulfilled that mission perfectly for 90 km. "The race was a little edgy and there were lots of attacks," recalled Manon Jutras. "The three of us were out in front, keeping up a pretty fast pace to prevent any dangerous breakaways."
At about 30 km from the finish line, a group of five women broke away from the pack, with Ina Teutenberg (Ger, Saturn Timex), Pam Shuster (USA, Autotrader.com), and Cathy Marsal (FRA, Intersports) among them. "Their teammates tried hard to slow down the pack to allow them to make their getaway, but we were able to keep the lead down to about 30 or 40 seconds," explained Jutras.
At the pre-determined spot, Geneviève Jeanson launched her attack. Three members of the Saturn Timex team were quickly on her heels: Lyne Bessette, American Kim Bruckner and Australian Anna Millward (AUS). This small group quickly caught up to and then overtook the previous leaders. As the single member of her team against three Saturn Timex cyclists, Geneviève Jeanson had to ride like the wind to outdistance them. First Bruckner and then Millward dropped back, leaving Bessette to resist Jeanson’s attack alone. So the two Quebecers reached the foot of the climb together, neck-and-neck, 4.5 km before the finish line. That’s when Jeanson pulled out all the stops and, in just 4.5 km, earned a lead of 2'15" on Bessette.
"I didn’t really feel in top shape," Geneviève Jeanson said after the race. "Luckily Manon, Gabriela and Amy were there, or else the day would probably have ended very differently. I wasn’t worried about the first breakaway. I knew they wouldn’t get far. But the whole stage was edgy from the beginning, and thanks to the girls, I was able to save my strength for that final climb."
Tomorrow will be another difficult stage: the cyclists will face three Category 3 climbs over the 117.5-km course, for a total ascent of 1,585 m.

SILVER CITY, N.M. - Canadian Genevieve Jeanson strengthened her lead in the Tour of the Gila Thursday, climbing with ease through the high plateau of southwestern New Mexico and seemingly unfazed by strong, gusty winds. Saturn riders Kim Bruckner and Lyne Bessette remain in second and third overall respectively, separated by one second.
Jeanson, just 19 years old, handily won the 70-mile second stage, which featured 4,530 feet of climbing, including a 5.5-mile ascent to the finish. Her winning time was 3 hours, 5 minutes, 59 seconds.
Bessette won an early time bonus sprint, picking up 15 seconds, and was part of a late breakaway that Jeanson initiated. Saturn riders Bessette, Bruckner and Anna Millward were the only ones capable of following Jeanson. But on the final climb the young Canadian from the Rona team was able to shake off all of her challengers and she finished alone, 2:19 minutes ahead of Bessette. Bruckner followed 12 seconds later and Millward was in a group that was 6:32 behind the winner.
Jeanson's overall lead is 3:53 ahead of Bruckner and 3:54 ahead of Bessette. Millward is fourth at 8:46.
In the men's 92-mile race, with 5,650 feet of climbing, Scott Moninger of the Mercury team won his second consecutive stage. The Boulder, Colo., rider who is known for ascending with great ease, slipped away on the last ascent. Scott Price was second and Saturn's Matt DeCanio was third. Eric Wohlberg, also of the Saturn team, was fifth.
Saturn was aggressive in the early stages of the race, with Tim Johnson and Trent Klasna in a breakaway, initially with two other riders. Klasna and Johnson were able to shed the others and had a 40-second gap on the rest of the field. But as the race approached the final climb, Moninger and the rest of the Mercury team, which had been aggressively chasing, caught the two leaders.
Jeanson et Bessette encore en vedette
Silver City, Nouveau-Mexique (DIAPO) - Les Québécoises Geneviève Jeanson et Lyne Bessette continuent de dominer le cyclisme nord-américain. Après deux étapes au Tour de Gila, présenté dans les environs de Silver City (Nouveau-Mexique), elles occupent les deux premiers rangs du classement général.
Comme prévu, la deuxième étape a été dévastatrice pour le peloton. D'une longueur de 113 kilomètres, cette étape se terminait par une interminable montée où les écarts se sont forgés. À une vingtaine de kilomètres de l'arrivée, trois membres de l'équipe Saturn, Bessette, Kim Bruckner et Anna Wilson-Milward, ainsi que Geneviève Jeanson ont définitivement largué le groupe principal. Bruckner a été la première larguée du petit groupe, suivie de Wilson-Milward et enfin de Bessette, qui a vu Jeanson passer la ligne d'arrivée plus de deux minutes avant elle.
"Je suis contente, par rapport au fait que c'est mon retour en course, a indiqué Lyne Bessette. Je n'ai pas encore mes jambes de course et mon bras droit est fatigué (Rappelons qu'elle s'est fracturé la clavicule droite il y a six semaines). Après la course, j'avais besoin d'un massage à mon bras plus qu'à mes jambes !" a-t-elle conclu en riant.
Vendredi, la troisième des cinq étapes promet encore une fois d'être difficile. Plus de 100 kilomètres, trois cols majeurs et plus de 1500 mètres de dénivelé entre le départ et l'arrivée.
