The Tour of the Gila threw everything it had at the 100 odd women on the start line this morning in Silver City, NM. Today's road race from Silver City to Mogollon was 72 miles of hilly open high desert countryside, complete with yuccas and howling cross winds. The Rona team of race leader Genevieve Jeanson had their eyes on the prize from the start and challengers Saturn and Intersports would have to take a back seat. From the start Jeanson's teammates would set tempo into a stiff wind. A break of 6 went away mid race including Saturn's Ina Teutenberg, Intersport's Cathy Marsal and AutoTrader's Pam Schuster, but the Rona team kept the race on simmer before other worldly sensation Jeanson turned up the heat on the final 7 mile climb to the summit at Mogollon. Leaving the group of leaders including Saturn's Bessette, Millward and Bruckner as well as 800.com's Andrea Ratkovic and Intersports teammates Elizabeth Emery and Jessica Phillips, Jeanson would gain an astonishing 2'19 to the second place finisher Bessette and 6'19 to the next group. In the end Jeanson's dominance was evident but so too were the solid team rides of Saturn and Intersports who together occupy the next 5 spots on GC.

Happy Birthday To...

Legendary speedskater and cyclist Sylvia Burka - today.
